What our Arctic travellers say

Sweden Highlights

When Is The Best Time To Visit Sweden?

The best time to visit Sweden really depends on what you are looking for in your vacation.

Like with most destinations, peak season for tourism in Sweden is around June to August. During this time of the year, you can also look out for the Sweden midnight sun, as the Arctic boasts 24 hours of sunshine.

That said, visiting Sweden during summer means you won’t get to catch the Northern Lights, as the longer days make the Aurora Borealis undetectable to the naked eye.

If this is something you want to check off your bucket list, the best time to visit Sweden is between October and March.

Why not get the best of both worlds and explore at the end of March or start of April? This way, the climate might be milder, whilst still allowing you to observe a natural wonder of the world.

Sweden is also a fantastic choice for winter getaways – Swedish Lapland and copious Christmas markets are just two of many tempting reasons why.

What Is The Climate Like In Sweden?

If you are looking to hunt the Northern Lights, the best times to visit coincide with the cooler periods of the year from autumn to spring, as this is when the sky is at its darkest, and thus maximises the chances of catching a glimpse.

During these optimum hunting times, temperatures range on average from -6°C to -20°C, but they can drop lower at night.

Don’t worry, though, as Arctic Direct has you covered! When you book a luxury trip through us, you can rest assured that your chosen accommodations will be cosy and warm – perhaps even with a hot tub to relax in – no matter the time of year.

And if you do head outdoors, you will be provided with thermal Arctic clothing rental for the duration of your stay, which includes a thermal snowsuit and snow boots as standard.

As the days become longer and longer, the climate becomes a little warmer during springtime, with average temperatures of -10°C to 10°C in rural areas, or around 5°C to 16°C in the city of Stockholm.

In the summer months, temperatures can reach as high as 20°C to 23°C. This climate is excellent for a romantic trip to see the Arctic Sweden midnight sun.

Where To Go In Sweden

Sweden absolutely has something for everyone – from bustling cities to historic and architectural wonders, not to mention one of the natural wonders of the world and breath-taking countryside.

The capital city of Stockholm consists of 14 islands that are connected by 50 bridges. The archipelago is always worth a stop – and many of our flights make their connections here, too.

However, arguably the most bucket-list-worthy places to visit in Sweden are further north, in the provinces of Norrland and Lapland. Lapland especially boasts some breath-taking sights and adventures, and is largely more untouched than its namesake in Norway.

The world famous ICEHOTEL is situated in Jukkasjärvi, which is perfectly positioned for you to look at the midnight sun in Kiruna during the summer, and gaze upon the Northern Lights throughout the rest of the year.

Going from ice to snow, another fantastic offering is the IGLOOTEL in Arvidsjaur, in Swedish Lapland – or you could take to the forests of Harads with the Treehotel. Brandon Lodge is also an excellent option for those exploring the area of Luleå, where you can view the Northern Lights from the frozen sea.

How To Get Around In Sweden

The easiest way to explore Sweden’s cities is on foot or by bicycle – or why not take advantage of their public transport systems and train links?

You can also traverse much of Sweden’s coastline via boat. For a multi-destination vacation, however, you will almost definitely want to fly.

But exploring Sweden doesn’t have to be a case of getting from A to B, it’s about enjoying the ride! That’s why our packages also include the opportunity to travel using more untraditional (and exciting!) modes of transport, such as skiing, horse riding, snowmobiling, river rafting, and taking a trip on a husky-led sled or wagon.

These activities are led by a guide – but if you want a bit more freedom to come and go as you please, local bike and kayak hire are widely available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I book my Sweden holiday with Arctic Direct?

UK passports do not need a visa, but ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new travel authorisation requirement expected to be operational soon. While it was originally planned for 2024, it has been delayed, with the latest updates suggesting the system will begin running in early 2025. Once implemented, UK passport holders (and citizens of other visa-exempt countries) will need to apply for ETIAS before travelling to the Schengen Area.

Whether you want to chase the Northern Lights, stay in an iconic Ice Hotel, or explore Sweden’s stunning wilderness, we design holidays that are customised just for you. From family-friendly getaways to romantic escapes, your trip will be as unique as you desire.

The best time to visit Sweden depends on your interests. For Northern Lights and winter activities (like dog sledging or staying in the Ice Hotel), the greatest time is between December and March. For a milder climate, outdoor activities, and the Midnight Sun, the summer months from June to August are ideal. Autumn is good for seasonal colours and Northern Lights without snow giving the possibility to see the reflections on the water.

This depends on the time of year you travel, but for our most popular winter trips, we can assist with thermal outer suits and boot rentals for most resorts.
