What our Arctic travellers say

Finland Highlights

When Is The Best Time To Visit Finland?

If you’re on a Northern Lights hunt specifically, the best time to visit Finland is late august (or September) to early April.

For trips to Finland in general, the summer months of June, July, and August are the best – it’ll be warmer, the days feel longer, and the landscape will be blossoming and pretty.

If it’s a winter wonderland experience you’re after, Finland in winter can be breathtakingly beautiful. Here at Arctic Direct we offer Christmas holiday packages in Finland to experience this! With the colder months comes lots of wintery outdoor activities like cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and reindeer rides. You won’t be cold for long, though, as you can warm up in one of the finest staples of Finland – their famous saunas.

Transport in Finland

Like many things in Finland, the transport system is relatively stress-free, even though the options can be a little pricey. From high-tech trains to efficient buses to traffic-free cycle lanes, Finland transport options are varied.

To best enjoy the Finnish countryside, we recommend the nation’s excellent train network. Trains run very efficiently and reach most major cities in the south of the country, including hotspots like Turku and Tampere. Train travel is also a good option for those looking to get cross-country quickly, like the high-speed Pendolino trips or faster InterCity trains. Trains are high-tech in Finland and can include snazzy features like sleeper trains, onboard play areas for children, and quiet booths for making phone calls without disturbing other travellers. We also occasionally offer an overnight train (Sometimes called the ‘santa train’ from Helsinki to Rovaniemi.

If you’ve got a bit of time in your hands, you could opt for public buses. They travel to most villages, towns, and cities in Finland, they’re relatively inexpensive, and their seats are quite comfortable, but they do move at quite a leisurely pace. The buses aren’t really an option if you’re trying to get somewhere in a hurry due to Finland’s lack of motorways and slow speed limits – don’t expect to be journeyed much faster than 37 miles per hour.

What to do in Finland

As we’ve mentioned, sauna culture is hugely popular in Finland – there are approximately 3 million saunas, despite the population being just over 5 million.

If you’re looking to feel energised rather than relaxed, visit Finland in the peak summer months when the Midnight Sun means you won’t find any dark at all.

Foraging wild food is another Finnish pastime – everyone in Finland is permitted to enjoy nature responsibly, which means anyone can pick berries, collect mushrooms, or go fishing. The foods retrieved are always fresh, delicious, and safe, thanks to the cleanliness of Finland and the purity of the air.

The Northern Lights, or the natural phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis, are naturally a big draw when it comes to visiting Finland. These famous dancing green lights can be seen across much of the Arctic night sky, that’s if you’re lucky enough of course.

It takes a lot of effort to see the Northern Lights, you should be prepared to spend a lot of time seeking a prime spot, and you’ll be outside in the cold a lot. For the best chance of catching the Northern Lights, we suggest heading north to Finnish Lapland, where the lights shine pretty much every clear night between September and March.

One of the best reasons to visit Finland is its thousands of lakes, beautiful hills and valleys, and snow-capped mountains. Finland has one of the most exotic natural landscapes in the world. The ‘Right to Roam’ rule in Finland means you’re able to set up a tent anywhere in the country, as long as you’re not disturbing the people or the nature.

Finland is packed to the brim with friendly people – the Finns love their country and are proud of their culture. Tourists report being received with openness, warmth, and a helpful attitude.

As far as capital cities go, Helsinki is a pretty special one. The city boasts amazing food, great shopping, awe-inspiring art, and beautiful architecture. Whether you’re looking to enjoy Finnish sauna culture or explore a vibrant nightlife, there’s something for everyone in Helsinki.

Frequently Asked Questions

What luxury experiences can I enjoy in Finland?

Finland offers a range of luxury experiences, from exclusive stays at the intimate Livo Arctic Resort with just 10 igloos, to Kakslauttanen—the original glass igloo resort or Nangu, an adults only retreat. For an even more personalised and upscale experience, you can choose private transfers and excursions.

Finland is an excellent choice for a family holiday, with plenty to enjoy for both kids and adults. Children over the age of 4 can take part in snow-filled adventures like sledding, snowshoeing, meeting huskies and reindeer, and visiting Santa Claus in magical Lapland.

We suggest packing thermal base layers, fleeces, insulated trousers (like ski pants), and a warm winter coat. Don’t forget essentials like thick socks, gloves, a hat, and a scarf—avoid cotton as it doesn’t insulate well when wet. Sturdy walking or snow boots with good grip are also important. For most excursions, and at some resorts, thermal snowsuits and boots are provided for the duration of your stay.

No, UK passport holders do not need a visa to travel to Finland for short stays. You can visit Finland—and other Schengen Area countries—for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. If you do not hold a UK passport, we recommend checking the entry requirements on the government website for further information.
