Lapland Northern Lights Holidays Packages

Lapland is considered to consist of the northern areas of four different countries, which include:

  • Finland
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Russia

Located in the Arctic area, Lapland is full of character. From its summers where the sun never sets, to its large reindeer population (that rivals its human population), Lapland promises exciting adventures for all travellers.

While the size of Lapland amounts to 100,367 km², almost as big as Belgium, Holland, and Switzerland together, it is actually an underpopulated region with a population of around 178,522 people.

Sápmi is the Sámi (indigenous people) people’s name for their traditional territory, usually referred to as Lapland. The Sámi people are from the northern parts of  Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia.

What our Arctic travellers say

Northern Lights Lapland Holiday Highlights

Best Time to Visit Lapland to see the Northern Lights

The best time to visit Lapland for Northern Lights viewings is in the autumn to early spring. This is because the skies need to be dark enough to witness the Aurora Borealis phenomena. However, despite being more visible in the dark, the Northern Lights can occur at any time of day.

Why Visit Lapland for the Northern Lights

Lapland resides almost entirely above the Arctic Circle, meaning that the Northern Lights can commonly be seen in this region. In Lapland, the Northern Lights tend to be visible from autumn to early spring but never guaranteed at any point. However, travellers have plenty of opportunities to witness the phenomenon in action should they visit Lapland.

With a Northern Lights holiday in Lapland from Arctic Direct, you can experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip that exceeds all of your expectations.

While viewing the Northern Lights might be the main purpose of a trip to Lapland, you shouldn’t overlook everything else that Lapland (and Arctic Direct’s Lapland holiday packages) can offer you.

From nights in a glass igloo, to reindeer and husky safari adventures, there are a number of different activities to do in Lapland, awaiting your eager participation. Explore Lapland in an unforgettable Northern Lights trip, curated exclusively by Arctic Direct.

The Northern Lights in Lapland

The Northern Lights are a mesmerising light show, a spectacle born from the sun ejecting charged particles (the solar wind) that hit the Earth’s ionosphere or upper atmosphere. These electrons and protons collide with gases, effectively producing billions of flashes in colourful light that bloom across the sky.

Ribbons of green and yellow, sometimes red, pink, and purple, can be seen on a clear night sky, appearing to almost dance. As the Earth’s magnetic field steers these particles towards the poles, this is why you can only observe the aurora in two areas – towards the North Pole (hence, the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis) and the South Pole (Southern Lights/Aurora Australis).

Of the former, Lapland is one of the best regions that you can travel to if you are looking for an incredible view of the Northern Lights.
